In 2018, the band was nominated for a Grammy Award for their song "Clockworks" under the "Best Metal Performance" category. In 20, Meshuggah was nominated for two Swedish Grammis Awards for their albums Catch Thirtythree and obZen, respectively. In the late 2000s, the band was an inspiration for the djent subgenre. The band was labelled as one of the ten most important hard rock and heavy metal bands by Rolling Stone and as the most important band in metal by Alternative Press. ![]() They rose to fame as a significant act in extreme underground music, became an influence for modern metal bands, and gained a cult following. Meshuggah has become known for their innovative musical style and their complex, polymetered song structures and polyrhythms. Their latest studio album, The Violent Sleep of Reason, was released on 7 October 2016. Since its formation, the band has released eight studio albums, six EPs and eight music videos. The band's current lineup consists of lead vocalist Jens Kidman, lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, drummer Tomas Haake, rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström and bassist Dick Lövgren. Their utilisation of polyrhythms and dissonance within note-perfect performances sees the chaos of the Rite displaced into the band’s distorted tone, whilst their lyrics and aesthetic suggest fears of a dystopian future, as opposed to the Rite’s echoes of a brutal and uncivilised past.Meshuggah is a Swedish extreme metal band formed in Umeå in 1987. The study draws particular comparisons with progressive death metal band Meshuggah, whose compositional techniques borrow from ideas laid out in the Rite whilst mirroring and developing its themes and imagery. However, the currents introduced by Stravinsky live on in heavy metal music both in the genre’s use of disorienting and abrasive musical elements, and in its fascination with controversial and fantastical themes.
